How To Relax In Style

relax in style

Somewhere in the chaos of 2020, the boundaries between weekdays and the weekend were eroded. On the plus side, some of us got to quit the monotony of the daily commute and spend a little more time easing ourselves into the working day. The question is, ‘are all the other facets of office life worth forgoing for that extra hour in bed’? Did we feel more at ease when we had a more apparent distinction between office life and home? It’s a tricky one, and the answers to those questions will depend on a multitude of factors including the size of your dwelling, who you share it with and how disciplined and self-motivated you are when it comes to remote working.

What’s without question is the fact that we need to know how to relax more than ever before. It’s been a tough year and if recent news is anything to go by it’s certainly not going to be Christmas as we know it. The greatest gift we could gift to ourselves and others this year is the ability to relax. To find inner peace, a modicum of calm in the madness and a strength to embrace 2021 and all that it might throw at us.

We can’t re-inflate your burst bubbles, and we can’t guarantee a prosperous start to the year but what we can do is impart some wisdom when it comes to relaxing in style. As a purveyor of luxury, class and comfort we think we think we’re qualified to bestow this gift upon you. So, grab your cashmere hot water bottle and a glass of mulled wine and read on for six tips to help you relax in style.

bown of london bathrobe

Stay in your bathrobe all-day

Dispense with the guilt and invite chic comfort into your closet with a bathrobe suave enough to stay in all day. Yes, we’re deadly serious. When your dressing gown is as debonair as a Bown of London robe you really can stay in it all day long. One of Bown HQ’s team even wore her velour robe as an overcoat to shop on a London high street (see picture above).

Choose a sumptuous heavyweight velour robe like the best-selling Salcombe or Marchand for post-shower cosy vibes or a decadent lightweight like Morocco for a pre-dinner amuse-bouche.

 gratitude journal

Show some gratitude

The evidence is clear to see. Gratitude is good for your physical and mental health, and the great news is that it doesn’t need to take up an unnecessarily large chunk of your day. As little as 5 minutes in the morning and before bedtime can begin to build a daily ritual that will pay dividends.

A gratitude journal encourages you to take time out of your day to reflect on your thoughts and experiences and focus on the positive. The more you focus on your positive feelings, the more happiness you will attract into your life. Keeping a gratitude journal is proven to help you take control, reduce stress, improve quality of sleep and increase motivation. We love the original Daily Greatness Journal, designed to help you navigate the year with a day to a page.

aromatherapy oils for relaxation

Indulge your senses

Infuse your environment with essential oils and feel the stress and strain melt away. There’s a plethora of brands and gadgets designed to blend into your home décor while fragrancing the air with heady scents to evoke calm, boost your energy or uplift your mood. Much like a gratitude journal, the daily use of essential natural oils can lead to healthy habits that signal a change of pace to your brain.

We’re a fan of Neom’s wellbeing pod essential oil diffuser that humidifies the air around you while releasing relaxing aromas to suit your mood. It even has a soft night light and a timer so you can drift off to slumber while it works its magic.

indoor sleep hammock

Sway your way to happiness

What better way to recreate the laidback vibes of that lost holiday than a hammock? The annual jaunt to the Caribbean may feel like a distant memory, but with a bit of intuitive interior décor and an indoor hammock, you could be swaying into bliss in the blink of an eye. Forget the busy airport queues and jetlag and leave the packing conundrums to another time. The only pre-vacation planning you need to do is check the weight-bearing load of your walls, and you’re off.  We’re taking Sir Richard Branson’s lead and opting for the Palacio Natura Hammock. If it’s good enough for Sir Richard, it’s good enough for us!

 herbal tea

Go tea total

Our Marketing Director, swears by the stuff and reckons her purchasing history puts her in pole position for share rights! We’re talking about Pukka teas and in particular their Relax and Night Time Variants.

Pukka’s Relax Tea is a soothing combination of chamomile, fennel and marshmallow root. It’s naturally caffeine-free and has ginger to aid digestion. Pukka’s Night Time tea is described as peace in a teacup and made with organic oat flower, soothing lavender and silky-sweet lime flower. Even the ingredients sound positively sleep-inducing.

sleep eye mask

Get some serious shut-eye

Nothing says nigh time quite like a soothing eye mask. It’s a spa staple that conjures up the sweet smell of jasmine, lavender, clary sage and geranium.  Times of uncertainty play havoc with our sleep, so anything that helps us to improve our sleep patterns has to be a bonus.

An eye mask can have many benefits, but one of them is helping you get off to the land of nod more swiftly.  According to Dr Alanna Hare of London’s Royal Brompton Hospital Centre for Sleep, wearing a sleep mask reduces the time spent lying awake in bed. This is because complete darkness boosts your body’s melatonin level, which will send you to sleep much quicker than if you weren’t wearing a sleep mask.

We’re plumping for the Illuminage skin rejuvenating eye mask purely for the fact that the silky fabric is enriched with Copper extracts, clinically proven to encourage firmness and to reduce fine lines. Deep sleep with anti-ageing properties is something we’re totally up for.
